The benefits of regular exercises are many, ideally wildlife response is tested as part of a larger oil spill response exercise to assess and optimise the level of integration of the wildlife aspects into the overall plan.

The Oiled Wildlife Response Network are involved in annual exercises with the Shannon Estuary Anti–Pollution Team (SEA-PT) which comprises of the Shannon Foynes Port Company, Local Authorities, and other organisations who operate in the vicinity of the Shannon estuary. Response capabilities are exercised with a simulated event involving a pollution incident that comprises of a practical element that complements the desktop element giving responders the opportunity to practice skills that will be required in an emergency, to work together closely and develop relationships, and to make complex decisions under stressful circumstances.
